The only player in University of North Dakota football history to have his uniform number retired, Cando, N.D. native Dave Osborn lettered two years for the Fighting Sioux in 1963 and 1964, when he led UND to back-to-back wins over North Dakota State. He was a first-year All-North Central Conference selection in 1964.
Osborn scored four touchdowns in the first game he started for the Sioux and in the last game he played for UND. He set the Sioux record for best single-game rushing average at 16.8 yards per carry when he ran the ball 12 times for 202 yards vs. Minnesota-Duluth on September 14th, 1963.
He scored 10 touchdowns in 1964 and let the Fighting Sioux to share of the North Central Conference title before moving on to a stellar NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings.
While with the Vikings, Osborn set the franchise record with 972 rushing yards in 1967. He ranked sixth among active rushers in the NFC at the conclusion of the 1974 season.
Osborn concluded his illustrious professional career with a one-year stint with the Green Bay Packers in 1975.
